The Bloc Québécois

by André Bernard

Taking into consideration its breakthrough in the 1993 Canadian federal election, the Bloc Québécois (BQ) has experienced an indisputable setback in the 1997 election. Seen proportionally to the number of seats or votes, the support it gathered in 1997 is 25 per cent lower than in 1993. In 1993, the BQ had won 49.5 per cent of the votes cast in Quebec and 54 of the 75 Quebec seats in the Canadian House of Commons; with its 54 seats (two more than the Reform Party), it became the Official Opposition. In the 1997 election, the BQ obtained the support of 37.4 per cent of Quebec voters who registered valid ballots and it only got 44 of its 75 candidates elected, losing to the Reform Party the status of Official Opposition.

Whatever explanation of their set-back is offered, the Bloc Québécois members cannot but worry about the future.
